Alyssa joined the Swine Vet Center (SVC) team in June 2018 after receiving her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota. She is an associate veterinarian for SVC while working toward a PhD in veterinary population medicine from the university, with a 2020 completion date.
Originally from Owatonna, Minnesota, Alyssa became interested in pursuing a career in agriculture when she took a job while in high school working at a 1,500-sow farm.
She worked in farrowing and realized she enjoyed it so much that she wanted to pursue a career in swine medicine. While Alyssa completed her education, she had the opportunity to complete externships and internships at several major swine companies and veterinary practices. In addition, she kept her hand in swine production by continuing to work at the sow farm and then later switched to a 3,000-sow operation.
Alyssa has become an expert on the diagnostics and epidemiology of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, which is the subject of her PhD work. This knowledge is helpful in her work at SVC.
“I enjoy practicing swine medicine and conducting applied research to help advance swine health and production. SVC is really focused on helping clients reach their goals,” she added. “They are a world-renowned swine veterinary clinic.”
Her life is not all work, however. Alyssa is an adult ballroom-dance instructor in her free time. Her interest in ballroom dancing started in high school and she has kept at it since.
Alyssa also loves camping, which she does with her husband Carl. They live in St. Paul, Minnesota.
